Recent Solar Installation

Signed a contract last week. 1500 sq feet, two ridge vents, Owens Corning membrane not tar paper, soffit intake vents, fascia intake vents, repair some storm damaged siding.  $5550.  Plywood at $65 a sheet.  If I need more than 10 then they are $55 a sheet.

They are also moving two of my cameras higher than I can reach and running the wires into my attic.   Just asked that I throw his guys lunch money.

While I wish we could do solar the overall costs are to high and not worth what we would have to give up.  I will be putting a small solar setup maybe three or four hundred watt panels on my shed to run my alarm system, cameras, cable modem and router etc off of the grid.  I could always fire up the furnace off the batteries at night as well if needed.

Edit for typo

Dave,

Who is the company you are using for your roof? 10 sheets is nice, my guy is only including 5 and $75 each additional.

I chose this contractor for a few reasons.  He is not a salesman he is a roofer.  He went on the roof and determined I could get 2 or 3 more years if I put a temporary heater cable for an ice dam problem or gamble and do nothing for a few years.  Nobody else out of 7 or so companies even went on the roof. They were all sales guys not roofers.  He also seemed pretty honest and told me the siding and gutter guys used good materials and he can salvage everything so adding the intake for the ridge vent is only $500 or so.  He could have said what a few others did that everything had to be replaced.

I found him from a local Facebook community page where he was highly recommended.  I had quotes from $5k to $16k.  He was the second lowest.

I just got another quote for $3800, this is a rough guestimate as I told him my square footage. He's coming Wednesday for an official quote. The other gentleman from A1 roofing went on the roof and we talked shop up there instead of my kitchen. Everyone will say what ever they can to make the sale. The actual work is another story. I'm liking $3800, even if it were $4500, that's much better than $6k.

Great discussion.

Roof was started today. 34 sheets of plywood as what was there was delaminating as they peeled up the shingles and ice dam shield.

I decided to go all out and replace the 10 sheets that are ok.  Old was 3/8 and they are using 1/2.  This way it's all fresh wood since so many were bad.  All total $8k for roof and 44 sheets of ply.  They will finish today.   They also are moving 3 of my cameras up higher and running the wiring into the attic.  If time permits I will pull out the Ed Fong and ask them to put that up also.

Today they ran a Cat 6 wire to one of my cameras that was wireless since the roof was open.

They also are replacing some rotted fascia boards they found, replacing some trim that came off in a storm, and a few misc little things.  They aren't doing a slap it up and get out of dodge job.  The first shingle didn't go up until they were 6 hours into it since there was so much plywood to be replaced. The lower roof is done and looks great.

Btw they are hustling.  One guy carries two sheets of ply up the ladder to the roof at a time.  It just turned into a huge job (I say it's huge they say it's no big deal).
