we can get a 900 watt 2 stroke at harbor freight tool for $ 85.00

Thats the one i was thinking of.

the only problem with getting stuff from harbor freight is most of it is over rated, and the quality is just not there. id rather wait and maybe raise up the money and get a Honda 2000 generator/inverter they are supper quiet and very reliable. plus they produce clean power that would be great for charging stations and sensitive electronics.

So what is the application for the generator specifically.  Does anyone actually have any experience with what is needed at a temporary headquarters for an extended period of time and know what items are a priority.  If I was going camping and had a bunch of extra money I would go for a Honda, a great and quiet generator.   But for a battery charger it is overkill and a waste of money.

I have owned, used, lent out and given away as presents a few of these generators.  They are rock solid, work great and are the best deal for $85 you can get.  The one I have now is over 15 years old.  I carried it on my boat to use when dockside electric was not available and keep my batteries charged and my appliances running.  It got put to use through several storms and never missed a beat, nor did any of the ones out there that I know of.

So in my humble opinion it better to buy the Honda for yourself so that the DRV does not have come bail you out.

Bill is right!

1 identify the issue or goal
2 make a list of requirement.
3 look at possible solutions
4 decide what makes most sense.

Sometimes we jump before looking.  I'm guilty of it!

Very well put Vinny.  Survival 101, maintain your resources as long as you can.  Money is a resource.  If you guys just go with the "got to have it cause I hear its the best"  attitude that will deplete that resource very quickly.

Like I said in the chat box last night. I am used to a spec then a BOM and schematic for a project like this.   But this is kind of informal.  Just don't do what the govt does.  That's how govt surplus and deficits are created at the same time ;)

I asked a friend in our IT department at work that does the repairs to see if he could find any info on known problems with that model.  He could not find anything.

I have a bunch of the larger units that Costco sold for a while.  So far very reliable.  Unfortunately you may have a lemon.

Sorry I tried.

It has come to MY attention that some members think that the DRV will be a Emergency response vehicle.. THAT IS FALSE, we are simply trying to build a functional Disaster response vehicle to aid effected areas and residents , not necessarily on the front line of a disaster but not far away either. The goal is to assist the community not be a group of vigilantes. we can accomplish this goal by having the items and ideas contained in this post to help residents, to give them power to charge a phone, to give them gloves to clean up debris, give them access (email via mesh hopefully) to reach out to loved ones and let them know they are ok, to print out some documents, grab a blanket, and maybe help them clear their yard or throw out the damaged items with shovels or saws.. To lend a hand.. Im starting to get the vibe that a few may think that we will be blasting to a disaster yellow lights flashing, and someones head out the window making siren sounds. thats not the case. This entire club/organization/group (however one will refer) was created solely on the lack of reliable communications during and after Sandy and i think we now have a system (repeater) in place that solved that issue. The DRV is a vehicle that we can use to help those that need it and also promote the group. We urge ALL members to get involved with CERT, or ARES, Or even to volunteer with local FD or AUX PD. Knowledge is power, knowing what to do during a disaster or emergency is VERY important. The admins/owners hope that as a group we can get involved or affiliated with CERT or like group, and that one day the DRV may be of service to them for communications, or anything else it will capable of. again i welcome and ask any memebrs who have questions or comments to direct them to me so we can discuss them. We do plan on having organized meets, field day type things, activities etc...If you want to directly be involved with the building of the DRV reach out to me, we simply dont have the means to make it a "group" project. But if all continues to progress "group" projects and activities will be in the future (once mother nature decides to ease up on us). Anyway, ill just add that this entire thing is new to us, some of us have a lot of experience regarding certain things and some of us dont. please be patient and reach out to us if you have ideas, concerns, or questions related to anything on the forum/drv/repeater. We are a very laid back bunch of guys and are just trying to make this the best it can be for everyone..

I think we have a seatbelt cutter, but road flares and fire extinguishers are a must and are needed, and I am interested in this mini tower you speak of, can you post a picture so we can see what it looks like.

Maybe its something we can mount to the back bumper? im not sure what it is but it may help with operations when the mobile repeater is set up.
