The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) collects, compiles, and analyzes
information on influenza activity year round in New York State (NYS) and produces this weekly
report during the influenza season (October through the following May). {

Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
During the Week Ending February 1, 2020
Influenza activity level was categorized as
geographically widespread {

This is the 10th consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.
There were 17,231 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a
15% increase over last week.
Of the 3,641 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories
924 (25.38%) were positive.
502 were influenza A (195 H1, 73 H3 and 234 sub-typing not performed)
422 were influenza B.
Of the 23 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center,
13 were positive for influenza.
12 were influenza A (H1)
1 was influenza A (H3).
Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 6.94%, above the regional
baseline of 3.20%.
The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 1,889, an
8% decrease over last week.

All clinical laboratories that perform testing on residents of NYS report all positive influenza test results to NYSDOH.

Increased or sustained is defined as 2 or more cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza per 100,000 population.

Influenza-like Illness was 9.13%, higher than the 7.33% observed last week.
2019-2020 Overview for Week 05 (January 26-February 1, 2020)Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was
higher than the previous week. Influenza
geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.
The percent of emergency department visits for ILI
statewide was 16.48%, higher than the previous
week and higher than the level reported at this
time in the previous year.
Of 6,404 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season
251 (4 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1)
44 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2)
3,390 (53 %) Influenza B, and
2,719 (42 %) Influenza A (type unspecified).
While 47% of total positive influenza test reports
are Type A influenza, 73% of influenza-associated
hospitalizations are due to Type A influenza.
A total of 1,366 influenza-associated
hospitalizations have been reported since the
beginning of the 2019-20 season.
Nine new influenza-associated deaths were
reported this week, resulting in a total of 32
influenza-associated deaths reported since the
beginning of the 2019-20 season.
One influenza-associated pediatric deaths was reported this week.
This is our first influenza associated pediatric death reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
Annual vaccination is the best way to protect children from influenza.
