The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) collects, compiles, and analyzes
information on influenza activity year round in New York State (NYS) and produces this weekly
report during the influenza season (October through the following May). {1}


Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
During the Week Ending January 4, 2020


• Influenza activity level was categorized as geographically widespread{2}

• This is the sixth consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.

• There were 10,085 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a 9% increase over last week.

• Of the 1,665 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories
334 (20.06%) were positive.
82 were influenza A (2 H1 and 80 subtyping not performed) 
252 were influenza B.

• Of the 16 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center,
13 were positive for influenza.
8 were influenza A (H1)
2 were influenza A (H3)
2 were influenza B (Yamagata) 
1 was influenza B (Victoria).

• Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 5.25%, above the regional
baseline of 3.20%.

• The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 1,964, a 34% increase over last week.

Influenza-like Illness was 5.35%, higher than the 4.83% observed last week.


*(2019-2020)* Overview for *(Week 01)*-*(December 29, 2019)*-*(January 4, 2020)*

Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was higher than the previous week.

Influenza geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.

A total of 472 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 11.21%, higher than the previous week and higher than the level
     reported at this time in the previous year.

Two new U.S. influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 7 influenza-associated deaths reported since
     the beginning of the 2019-20 season.


* Of 1,613 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
74 (5 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1)
20 (1 %) Influenza A (H3N2)
700 (43 %) Influenza B
819 (51 %) Influenza A (type unspecified).

• This is the seventh consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.

• There were 11,051 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a 10% increase over last week.

• Of the 3,615 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories, 799 (22.10%) were positive.
337 were influenza A (179 H1, 52 H3 and 106 sub-typing not performed)
462 were influenza B.

• Of the 39 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center
33 were positive for influenza.
26 were influenza A (H1)
5 were influenza A (H3)
1 was influenza B (Yamagata)
1 was influenza B (Victoria).

• Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 3.82%,
     above the regional baseline of 3.20%.

• The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 1,837, an 11% decrease over last week.

Influenza-like Illness was 5.36%, very similar to the 5.35% observed last week.



2019-2020 Overview for Week 02 (January 5-11, 2020)

Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was similar to the previous week.

Influenza geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.

A total of 643 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 10.88%, similar to the previous week but higher than the level
     reported at this time in the previous year.

Six new influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 13 influenza-associated deaths reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.


Of 3,281 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
128 (4 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1),
27 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2),
1,657 (51 %) Influenza B, and
1,469 (45 %) Influenza A (type unspecified).

No influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported this week.

No influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

A total of 784 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.


The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 12.47%, higher than the previous week and higher than the level
   reported at this time in the previous year.


Seven new influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 20 influenza-associated deaths reported since
   the beginning of the 2019-20 season.


Of 3,759 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
175 (5 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1),
35 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2),
1,877 (50 %) Influenza B, and

• This is the 10th consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.

• There were 17,231 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a 15% increase over last week.

• Of the 3,641 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories
924 (25.38%) were positive.
502 were influenza A (195 H1, 73 H3 and 234 sub-typing not performed) 
422 were influenza B.

• Of the 23 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center,
13 were positive for influenza.
12 were influenza A (H1)
1 was influenza A (H3).

• Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 6.94%, above the regional
baseline of 3.20%.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI
statewide was 16.48%, higher than the previous
week and higher than the level reported at this
time in the previous year.


Of 6,404 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) collects, compiles, and analyzes
information on influenza activity year round in New York State (NYS) and produces this weekly
report during the influenza season (October through the following May). {1}


Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
During the Week Ending February 29, 2020


• Influenza activity level was categorized as geographically widespread {2}

• This is the 14th consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.

• There were 8,459 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a 20% decrease over last week.

• Of the 2,927 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories,
702 (23.98%) were positive.
482 were influenza A (97 H1, 26 H3 and 359 subtyping not performed)
220 were influenza B.

• Of the 88 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center
67 were positive for influenza.
37 were influenza A (H1)
4 were influenza A (H3)
1 was influenza A (not subtyped)
1 was influenza B (Yamagata)
24 were influenza B (Victoria).

• Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 3.75%, above the regional
      baseline of 3.20%.

• The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 1,236, a 17% decrease over last week.

• There were no influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week. There have been 9 influenza-associated pediatric
deaths reported this season.

Influenza-associated Hospitalizations: Reported This Week: 224 / Season To Date: 2,454

Influenza-associated Deaths: Reported This Week: 7 / Season To Date: 65
                      Pediatric New This Week: 0 Pediatric / Season Total: 1

Influenza-like Illness was 6.46%, lower than the 7.80% observed last week.


Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was lower than the previous week. Influenza geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.

A total of 2,454 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 11.22%, lower than the previous week but higher than the level reported at this time in the previous year.


Seven new influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 65 influenza-associated deaths reported since
the beginning of the 2019-20 season.



Of 11,149 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
396 (4 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1)
77 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2)
5,589 (50 %) Influenza B,
5,087 (46 %) Influenza A (type unspecified).

No influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported this week. One influenza-associated pediatric death has been reported since the
beginning of the 2019-20 season. Annual vaccination is the best way to protect children from influenza.

• Of the 106 specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center

Influenza-like Illness was 7.46%, higher than the 7.02% observed last week. Due to the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory illness than usual at this
time.



Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was higher than the previous week. Influenza geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.

A total of 2,934 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 15.48%, higher than the previous week and higher than the level
   reported at this time in the previous year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory
      illness than usual at this time.


Two new influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 72 influenza-associated deaths reported since
   the beginning of the 2019-20 season.



Of 12,585 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
474 (4 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1)
106 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2)

Influenza Geographic Activity = WIDESPREAD

Influenza-associated Hospitalizations: Reported This Week: 37 / Season To Date: 2,971

            Influenza-associated Deaths: Reported This Week: 5 / Season To Date: 77

                                                Pediatric New This Week: 0 / Pediatric Season Total: 1

Influenza-like Illness was 7.01%, lower than the 7.42% observed last week. Due to the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory illness than usual at this
time.



Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was higher than the previous week. Influenza geographic activity continues at WIDESPREAD.

A total of 2,971 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

The percent of emergency department visits for ILI statewide was 15.96%, higher than the previous week and higher than the level
   reported at this time in the previous year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory
      illness than usual at this time.


Five new influenza-associated deaths were reported this week, resulting in a total of 77 influenza-associated deaths reported since
   the beginning of the 2019-20 season.



Of 12,714 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
479 (4 %) were Influenza A 2009 (H1N1)
107 (<1 %) Influenza A (H3N2)
5,999 (47 %)Influenza B, and
6,129 (48 %) Influenza A (type unspecified).


No influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported this week. One influenza-associated pediatric death has been reported since
the beginning of the 2019-20 season. Annual vaccination is the best way to protect children from influenza.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) collects, compiles, and analyzes
information on influenza activity year round in New York State (NYS) and produces this weekly
report during the influenza season (October through the following May). {1}


Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report
During the Week Ending April 4, 2020



• Influenza activity level was categorized as geographically SPORADIC {2}

• This is the 18th consecutive week that widespread activity has been reported.

• There were 193 laboratory-confirmed influenza reports, a 75% Decrease over last week.

• Of the 2,306 specimens submitted by WHO/NREVSS clinical laboratories
40 (1.73%) were positive.
41 were influenza A (79 H1, 17 H3 and 13 sub-typing not performed) 
9 were influenza B.

• Of the specimens resulted at Wadsworth Center, none were positive for influenza.

• Reports of percent of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI3) from ILINet providers was 7.22%, above the regional

• The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 43, a 60% decrease over last week.

• There were 0 influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this week.

• There have been 13 influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported this season. 2019 / 2020

All clinical laboratories that perform testing on residents of NYS report all positive influenza test results to NYSDOH.

• 43 counties reported cases this week.

• Incidence ranged from 0-15.02 cases/100,000 population.

Influenza-like Illness was 5.84%, lower than the 6.94% observed last week. Due to the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory illness than usual at this
time.



Outpatient Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity was higher than the previous week. Influenza geographic activity continues at REGIONAL.

A total of 2,993 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.

   reported at this time in the previous year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for
      respiratory illness than usual at this time.

   the beginning of the 2019-20 season.



Of 12,837 positive influenza tests reported to DPH this season,
