How Tarheel Antennas got started.

Robert Young founder of Tarheel Antennas is an avid mobile HF ham. Over the years Robert has used about every type HF mobile antenna that was on the market. He loved the features that motorized antennas provided him. Before 2000 motorized antennas did not stand up to the continued use in day to day operation. Especially in the environment which he worked. He kept buying, using, and then repairing them on the weekends after their breakdowns. He tried to have an antenna built the way he wanted but could get no one to build it.

In 2000 after years of trial and error and the continued repair of what was available on the market. Robert decided to try to build an antenna that he could depend on in his work environment.

This was the start of Tarheel Antennas. Although there was never any intention to start an antenna company it just happened. Robert just wanted to build 12 to 14 antennas to pay for the material he used to build the antenna and maybe pay for the antenna he had envisioned.

Robert took the first 12 antennas he had built to the Dayton Hamvention 2000 in flea market Robert sold the first 12 antennas and came home with orders for 8 more. Tarheel Antennas just grew from there.

In 2001 Tarheel approached Pittman about making a motor for motorized antennas. This is when the design of the motorized antennas changed through out the motorized antenna industry no matter who built the antennas.

In 2008 we split Tarheel Antennas into 2 divisions. Design and product development remained in North Carolina. Sales and product manufacturing was relocated to Missouri. This change was made in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand for our products.
