Interesting Reading and Ideas for backyard filtration
« on: June 01, 2013, 12:49:40 pm »
"Water procurement in an urban survival situation such as an earthquake or hurricane can be tricky. The water can be contaminated with human waste, toxic chemicals, and pathogens.
We decided to build a filter that could be put together with items from a hardware store or even your backyard. Filters can be built using drink bottles, aluminum cans, and coffee cans."
Items used to build emergency filter:

* Sand
* Charcoal
* Sphagnum (peat moss)
* Cloth
* Moss
* Ultraviolet light
* Stones

One of the things to remember when filtering water is the number .2 microns.  Its the size of the filtration media that will filter out most biologicals.  Viruses are the exception.  They are near impossible to filter out and the water should be chemically treated if virus exposure is possible.

I'm going to revive this thread because I have a few questions in regards to storing water under ground in a tank... Can I do this?

I wanted to collect rain water in two tanks. not sure if its going to be 250, 500 or 1000 Gallon tank.. Just gathering information..

I wanted to add a pump system either mechanical or electric to my current water pipe in my house.. good idea? Scrap it?

i dont see why you wouldnt be able to store water underground in a tank one of the benifits is it would keep it some what cold. you would just have to make sure that whatever tank you do use it must be able to handle the eliments. i would hate to see someone bury a tank and find out 2 years later that it had been breached.

be alittle more specific about this pump thing you want to do. do yo umean hook it up to the city pipe coming into your house?

I would think after some period of time, (what time frame I have no idea) bacteria maybe a concern but I have no idea, I'm just spit-balling

Maybe if your filter the water while your pumping, you would be ok

Yes, absolutely, many filters...

We all have water shut off's in our homes. (or at least I do)  I was thinking of adding another valve to my current water pipe system.

Again, no idea if this can be done.. Of coarse shut down the main, then turn my water valve with an electric pump like a RV or camper..

Just trying to think of ways on how to do it...  If we are going to prep, might as well do all avenues of the task... ;)

Yes, most if not all have the Main SCWA Gate valve you show. SCWA Valve always before the Meter, Homeowner Valve is after the meter. Heres a funny story, I had SCWA come to my house to do a pressure test. In the
conversation, I told him that when I shut of the water in the house, I always use the valve you show. He then proceeded to explain to me that that's only for SCWA use and I'm supposed to use the Homeowner main shutoff
valve (which I have). I said to him, look at it, it looks like its ready to explode from age. He turned it and guess what a found a day later, I big puddle of water. So Now I had to pay for a plumber to replace my valve.
I said to my wife, "And thats why I never used that valve"!!!!

BTW- I see the two Black Zip Ties, Nice!!!!!!!!!

OK Joey

Let me just say this about fresh water. Of course it is the most important resource in a survival situation but lets keep it in perspective. On long Island, if we loose fresh water it will be because we are in an extremely
dire situation, most likely, post apocalyptic. Using Sandy as the gauge and lets take Island Park as an example where the ENTIRE town was under water, we lost power and natural gas but never water. If you loose your
house in a disaster, you will not be able to access your stored water.
Of course we should stock water in an emergency but what I am saying on this subject is sink your prep money into the resources you know we will loose like stand alone power and maybe an aggressive pumping system.
Going to the expense of storing hundreds of gallons of water and a pumping filtration system to deliver it is just not necessary and will most likely never get used..
Just my take on it...........
