April is ending with an unpleasant weather pattern in the Northeast as three weather systems in seven days bring rain and even more snow.

This stretch of unsettled weather began Tuesday with the first system. Rain and thunderstorms spread through the Interstate 95 corridor and snow developed across the interior Northeast. A dusting to a few inches of snow was reported by Wednesday morning from central New York and the Berkshires of western Massachusetts into parts of Vermont and northern Maine.

More Storms to Watch Into Next Week
After that system departs Friday night, we'll turn our attention to the next two storms. Those two systems will track through relatively cool air associated with a southward plunge of the jet stream that is forecast to set up from the Great Lakes into the Northeast.

The first of those systems will arrive during the latter half of the weekend, and the second one should make its appearance by the middle part of next week.

Low pressure will track through the Northeast from Saturday night through Monday with the next round of wet weather.

Rain and gusty winds will impact areas from the mid-Atlantic to eastern New England. Most locations in the interior Northeast will also have rain to start.

Colder air will arrive across the interior Northeast by Sunday night, and that could mean more snowfall for some areas. Snow or a rain-and-snow mix might develop in the higher elevations from West Virginia to parts of upstate New York and northern New England. Wet snow could last into Monday night in some of those areas.

Snowfall accumulations could range from a dusting to perhaps a few inches Sunday night into Monday, particularly in the higher elevations of New York and northern New England.

The third system in this weather pattern will begin to arrive Tuesday night or Wednesday and last into next Thursday, but forecast details are still uncertain.

This system could bring another round of rain and wind to parts of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. There could even be some thunderstorms ahead of the cold front's arrival.

* Interior areas could receive more snowfall, especially in the higher terrain.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

April is ending with an unpleasant weather pattern in the Northeast as wet and cool conditions will dominate the region.

This stretch of unsettled weather began earlier this week when rain and thunderstorms spread through the Interstate 95 corridor and snow developed across the interior Northeast. A dusting to a few inches of snow was reported by Wednesday morning from central New York and the Berkshires of western Massachusetts into parts of Vermont and northern Maine. Another system ended the work week on a cool and wet note.

Late Weekend-Early Week System
A southward plunge of the jet stream is in place over the Great Lakes and Northeast. This southward dip is will allow temperatures to be near or below average through the end of April there.

An area of low pressure will track off the Northeast coast Sunday night through Monday.

Rain will begin to develop in the mid-Atlantic into early Sunday and will spread northward across most of the Northeast on Sunday. A few rumbles of thunder are possible, mainly from northeastern Virginia to the southern New England coast.

Colder air will arrive across the interior Northeast by Sunday night, and that could mean more snowfall for some areas. Snow or a rain-and-snow mix might develop in the higher elevations from West Virginia to parts of upstate New York and northern New England.

Lower elevations of the Northeast will see rain persist through Monday and wet snow could last into Monday night in some of the higher elevations.

Winds will also increase and will be gusty at times Sunday through Monday, especially toward the coast.

Minor coastal flooding also cannot be ruled out.

Most areas can expect less than 2 inches of rainfall through Monday, although some pockets of heavier rain is possible.

Snowfall accumulations will range from a dusting to perhaps a few inches Sunday night into Monday in the higher elevations of New York and northern New England. Some higher elevations in southern Vermont, northern New Hampshire and western Maine could pick up close to a foot of snow.

Mid-to-Late Week Forecast
There won't be much of a break before another system will begin to arrive Tuesday night or Wednesday.

This next system will be slow moving and may bring precipitation to the Northeast through the end of the week.

Rain is generally expected with this system, although some snow may fall in northern Maine.

Some of the details remain uncertain so be sure to check back to weather.com for updates.

April is ending with an unpleasant weather pattern in the Northeast as wet and cool conditions dominate the region.

Low pressure is swirling off the New England coast this final Monday of April. With some cold air in place, snow has blanketed parts of interior New England and New York state.

Snow has fallen at elevations as low as 1,000 feet in parts of Upstate New York. Up to 14 inches of snow had fallen in Cherry Valley, New York, some 50 miles west-northwest of Albany.

Snow was falling Monday morning in Berlin and Lebanon, New Hampshire, and as far south as the high country of West Virginia.

Lower elevations of the Northeast will have rain persist Monday, and wet snow could last into Monday night in some of the higher elevations.

Winds will also be gusty at times Monday, especially toward the coast.

Additional snowfall accumulations will range from a dusting to perhaps a few inches Monday in the higher elevations of New York and northern New England. Some of the highest elevations could receive up to 6 inches of snowfall.

Winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service in the higher elevations of eastern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and western Maine. The heavy, wet nature of the snowfall, in combination with gusty winds, could cause localized power outages and tree damage.

Next Storm: Wetter and Windier
There won't be much of a break before another system arrives Wednesday night.

This next system will be slow-moving and may bring precipitation to the Northeast through Friday.

It will also be a warmer system, with rain generally expected.

A few showers might develop during the day Wednesday, but the steady rain moves in Wednesday night and it could be heavy at times.

Rain will continue into Thursday, and a few rumbles of thunder are possible in the mid-Atlantic.

This band of rain and t-storms ahead of the cold front may produce strong winds gusts capable of some tree damage and power outages Wednesday night into Thursday.

By Friday, the heaviest rain should have exited the East Coast, but leftover scattered rain showers are expected over much of the Northeast.

This stretch of unsettled weather in the Northeast began last week when rain and thunderstorms spread through the Interstate 95 corridor and snow developed across the interior Northeast. A dusting to a few inches of snow was reported by last Wednesday morning from central New York and the Berkshires of western Massachusetts into parts of Vermont and northern Maine. Another system ended the workweek on a cool and wet note.

April is ending with an unpleasant weather pattern in the Northeast as wet and cool conditions dominate the region through this week.

The early week system is pulling away from the Northeast, but this break will be brief as another low pressure system will begin to spread into parts of the region beginning late Wednesday.

Next Storm: Wetter and Windier
This next system will be slow-moving and may bring precipitation to the Northeast through at least Friday. A plume of tropical moisture will accompany this system and will likely lead to moderate to heavy rainfall in the region.

It will also be a warmer system, with rain generally expected.

A few showers might develop during the day Wednesday in parts of Pennsylvania and southern New York, but the steady rain moves in Wednesday night and Thursday.

A few rumbles of thunder are possible, especially in the mid-Atlantic on Thursday.

Moderate to heavy rain will continue in New England and parts of eastern New York on Friday. A few showers may linger into Saturday there.

This band of rain and thunderstorms ahead of the cold front may produce strong wind gusts capable of some tree damage and power outages Wednesday night into Thursday.

A widespread area of 1 to 3 inches is anticipated across much of the Northeast through Friday.

Locally heavy rain is expected and could lead to flash flooding. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has highlighted areas from eastern Maryland into southern New York and western Connecticut as having a slight risk of excessive rainfall on Thursday.

Early Week System Recap
Low pressure swirled off the New England coast to begin the final week of April. With some cold air in place, snow blanketed parts of interior New England and New York state Sunday into Monday.

Snow fell at elevations as low as 1,000 feet in parts of upstate New York. Up to 15.5 inches of snow was measured in Cherry Valley, New York, some 50 miles west-northwest of Albany.

Snow was also reported Monday in Berlin and Lebanon, New Hampshire, and as far south as the high country of West Virginia.

Gusty winds downed trees in portions of eastern Massachusetts Monday morning and Quincy, Massachusetts, measured a wind gust of 47 mph Monday.
