A late-season snowstorm has already blanketed parts of the Rockies, Plains and Midwest, and will track through the Northeast through Saturday.
There is a broad southward plunge of the jet stream that is keeping below-average temperatures anchored in place throughout much of the central and eastern United States. Pivoting through that jet stream is a disturbance that is wringing out a narrow west-to-east band of snow that could be heavy in spots.

The snow or snow-and-rain mix will spread to southern and central New England, where it will linger into Saturday.
Parts of central Massachusetts have been upgraded to a winter storm warning, where slightly heavier snowfall amounts are possible. Scattered power outages are possible in area where trees have begun to bloom. Travel will likely be dangerous in this area as well.
Winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service from the southern Great Lakes into southern New England.
Areas under winter weather advisories will have lighter amounts of snowfall, which could still slow down travel in some areas.
How Much Snow?
Areas in a narrow zone in the interior Northeast will receive a few inches of snowfall. There will be a few spots that may receive more than 5 inches, particularly in parts of north-central Pennsylvania, the Catskills of New York and the Berkshires in Massachusetts.
Localized power outages are a possibility in areas that pick up the heaviest snow totals.
